SACRAMENTO — President Donald Trump wants California to adopt voter identification requirements, but he faces intense opposition from top Democrats in the state, including the state’s top elections official.
Days after he was inaugurated, Trump floated the idea of conditioning aid for the Los Angeles wildfires on the state adopting a voter ID requirement. In March, he signed an executive order to require that Americans show documents verifying their citizenship to register to vote.
“Election fraud,” Trump told an audience in the White House as he signed the order. “This will go a long way toward ending it. … We’ve got to straighten out our election. This country is so sick because of the fake elections and the bad elections, and we’re going to straighten it out, one way or the other.”
